How To Upcycle Bicycle Parts
Our thoughts on upcycling and riding a bicycle
If you have a bicycle and you use it you know that sometimes it can break. Of course, this is normal because most of the things we use in our modern world, tend to break sometimes. It could be the chain, the gear, one of the rims or the whole frame. So you buy a spare part, and throw away the broken one. Well then, here are a few suggestions on how to reuse bicycle parts.
Don’t throw away such things, you damage the environment, plus every one of them can be useful. And of course there is that feeling of pleasure and success when you create something. Especially when it is handmade by yourself.
If you have an old rusty bicycle maybe you should try to repair it or buy a new one. The bicycle is unique by its nature and we all should consider riding more and driving less. But let’s not throw away objects that can be put to such a good use.
Upcycled Bicycle Clocks Made From Gear
This compact wall time clock (above) is created with upcycled bicycle gear. The actual vivid red background was produced from recycled vinyl seating textile. Measuring 5″ in diameter, it can be an excellent upcycled wall clock. Hanging hardware is connected to the back of the clock, requires one AA battery.
Here is a link to the upcycled bicycle gear clock created by Liz Dickey, an artist and teacher in Oakland, California.
The second clock is also created by Liz. We just couldn’t resist to show you another one and link to her online shop for bicycle clocks at Etsy.
“Each chain ring is thoroughly cleaned before use with every effort made to bring out its very best, however, due to the recycled nature of this product some scratches may remain.”
Upcycle the bicycle chains and create beautiful bracelets, cuffs and earrings
This bracelet (left below) was carefully made from used bicycle chain and innertubes without glue, tape, or thread, resulting in a piece of durable jewelry that will endure a lot of wear. The chainlinks in this cuff were all carefully cleaned of grease, and still show the character and story of their long life. Here is the link for the upcycled bicycle earrings.
These are only few ideas about this. Imagine how many other upcycling options are there. Such as creating art sculptures or making chairs out of the bicycle frames – indeed it is endless. So upcycle bicycle parts and have fun while doing so!
